This past winter I rallied our family to do some Random Acts of Kindness (RAKs). We put flowers on cars at the hospital parking lot and we baked chocolate chip cookies sending some in the mail and hand delivering others.
Months later, the girls are still talking about their RAKs and have been asking when we can do more. Every time we discuss it their faces light up and their eyes get sparkly. I can’t imagine a better life lesson to teach them.
The bonus is that the RAKs make someone else’s day a little brighter too. And who couldn’t use extra sunshine in their life?
This summer we’re planning on filling each week with RAKs. We’ll be doing little things for friends, family, and strangers. Here is a list of RAKs that little kids can do.
The most important thing we’ll be doing is a letter writing campaign.
Every week each of the girls will be writing a note, letter, or drawing a picture for someone else. We’ll mail or hand deliver them. The notes don’t need to be complicated. They can write to a neighbor who has a pretty garden, notice someone’s new swing set, or simply say,
“Have a great day!” or “Stay cool!”
Not only does this project keep them writing all summer, it brings a little happiness and joy to others. I’ve been writing at least 1 letter a week to others since our first RAK campaign and I can’t even begin to describe how happy it has made me. My heart swells every single time I do it.
Can you imagine all the joy that could be projected this summer if you joined us on this campaign? Help us spread joy and commit to writing someone a letter every week through Labor Day. It’s the perfect project for your family to be a part of.
Every time you write or receive a letter, take a photo and post it, adding the hashtag #ProjectJoy. I’ll be looking for them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
If you are looking for ideas of Random Acts of Kindness that your children can do, we’ve compiled a list of them HERE. It includes a prinatable that you can hang on your fridge. What are some other ways your family can help to spread joy to others?
So in. Love it – starting today!
