Years and years ago my friend Linda sent me an email with this recipe. I thought it looked so fun and knew I had to make it. The idea of a sunflower on a cake was such a fun idea and I loved the brightness. This cake has become a staple for us every Easter and is always a big hit at parties and get togethers.
SUNFLOWER PEEPS CAKE
Ingredients:
1 box cake (your choice of flavor)
1 can of chocolate frosting
About 1 cup of chocolate chips or brown Reese’s pieces
About 15 – 18 chick Peeps
Directions:
- Bake the cake following the directions on the box. We use an 8″ pan. If you use a gluten free cake mix, be aware that most brand of gluten free cake mix only provide enough cake mix for one pan, not two.
- Assemble the cake as you normally would.
- Add the chick Peeps around the perimeter of the cake. I allow half of the chick to hang off the edge of the cake.
- Fill the center of the cake with chocolate chips or brown Reese’s pieces. Since the girls were really little this was a great job for them. This step worked best when the cake was on the kitchen table and they sat in their chair on their knees. This way they were “above” the cake and able to easily see where the chocolate chips needed to go without getting frosting all over their arms (which they wouldn’t have minded!). Just keep an eye out for “missing” chocolate chips or Reese’s pieces. If little kids help, it may take a long time for them to get the chocolate chips on the cake. Your frosting may harden. To attach the Peeps, take a little bit of chocolate frosting and add it to the bottom of each Peep to act like glue.
I recently took new photos for this post. The girls are much older and still love this cake. In fact, they couldn’t wait until I was done photographing it so they could bite into it!
Do you have a cake or a dessert that is a family favorite? If so, what is it?
