Back in May we took a vacation to Disney World. We’re no strangers to Disney and have gone at least once a year since Kate was 6 months old.
Even though the girls are familiar with Disney World, every year is a new experience. This year was especially exciting for Kate because she was big enough to ride on Splash Mountain. Caroline was still too short for Splash Mountain and wasn’t exactly happy about that. There may have been tears. And when I say “maybe”, I mean there were definitely tears.
To make this trip a bit more special, I decided to make them Minnie Mouse outfits. I used a red cotton fabric with large white polka dots and sewed up the Train to Crazy’s simple skirt. It’s a super easy skirt to make and I seem to make them all the time. If you’ve never made it, what are you waiting for? It’s so EASY! It has an elastic waistband so it’s easy for the girls to pull it on and pull it off.
For the shirt, I decided to do an appliqué design by hand. “By hand”, I mean, I used some Heat & Bond to adhere the design to the shirt and then sewed it to the shirt. (As opposed to doing an appliqué on my embroidery machine, which has a different look to it because the edges of the designs are stitched with a tighter satin stitch border.) If I were to have made this design by doing embroidery on my machine, I definitely would have looked on machine embroidery designs for some ideas (they have loads of them).
They didn’t a bat an eye about wearing a Minnie Mouse shirt. As a matter of fact, they had been asking me to make them one for a while. And in case you’re wondering, we ALWAYS dress them alike if we’re going some place crowded like an amusement park, the pool, or the beach. It just makes it so much easier to find them!
As we headed down the road to the Magic Kingdom, Kate (who’s 5) started to notice some pictures of Mickey Mouse. Then we passed through the arch that has Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Goofy.
She KNEW that arch. She sucked in her breath. Then she whispered to Caroline that we were going to Disney World! Honestly, I didn’t expect that they would notice the sign. We had turned the tv on purposely so the girls would be distracted.
They were so excited as we pull into the parking lot and headed on our way. We stopped at the wall to get this picture before heading in. Poor Rebecca was so nervous being up high on the wall that we couldn’t get her to look at the camera.
I had to take this picture of Rebecca next to Walt Disney and Minnie Mouse!
