Countdown to Kindergarten!

See that sweet little girl in the picture above?  That girl made me a mama 6 years ago.  (Technically she’s only 5, but I became a mama the day she was conceived so I say 6.) Well, she is going to Kindergarten in 3 weeks.

3 weeks!
As anxious as this might have made me in the past, I am remarkably calm about it.  I KNOW she will love it.  She loves being with other kids and LOVES learning.
She’s so excited to start that she keeps asking me how many more days until her very first day.  So we created a chain to countdown the days.  I can not take any credit for this project.  My best friend from high school just posted a picture on FB of her daughter next to their chain and I thought it was a brilliant idea!  She said she used to make countdown chains all the time when she was a kid.  Such a fun thing to do to countdown to holidays and events!  I am only blogging about it because she doesn’t blog.  Thanks for the idea, D!
Anyway, I got a calendar out and had Kate count how many days there were until her first day.  It was also a great lesson in days of the week and the organization of a calendar.  Then I cut out the strips while she was “resting” in the afternoon but she could have totally done it herself – I didn’t even think about it!  I hate missing a teaching moment.
When rest time was over, she put all the links together while I stapled them for her.  We hung it in the kitchen and every day she take a link off.  She continually counts the links throughout the day and comes to tell me how many more days of school she has left.  It is so cute and great practice for her.
When do the kids in your life start back to school?  Anyone else have a little one starting school this year?  How do you make it memorable for them?
xoxo

Aw, that is very fun! We did it sometimes when I was a kid and had forgotten about it until I saw this post.

So neat, Ashley! I don't remember ever doing it at home. Maybe I did at school? It's such a fun idea that now they want to do countdown chains for everything! We currently have 2 going on at our house.
