Baby’s 1st birthday cake smash

I have officially survived birthday season.  It was a whirlwind but so much fun.  Rebecca’s first birthday was celebrated in the beginning of May and we made it a sweet pea theme.  I didn’t go all out with the theme because I did a bigger item for favors.  More on that in another post.

For each of the girls’ 1st birthdays we do a big cake smash.  I make one of those giant cupcakes and create a faux studio and let them go at it.  Rebecca’s birthday was no different.

She is such a smiley baby!
She got some icing on her leg and didn’t know what to make of it.
Taking her first bite.  Until now, she hadn’t really had any sweets yet.
They couldn’t wait to get their hands on the cake.  Notice how much icing is on the front of the cake.
Notice how much icing is gone from the cake – specifically Caroline’s side.
She was really starting to like it!
This is how messy she was when we were done.
She had so much fun!  I do have to say, it was most difficult for Kate and Caroline to let Rebecca get started without them.  They couldn’t wait to taste the cake.  And by taste, I mean devour!
So this smash cake was so easy to set up.  I am by no means a photographer.  Heck, I don’t even have a great camera.  First thing I did was move the couch against the opposite wall.  I wanted to use the back of the couch to hold a white sheet.  I draped the top of the sheet over the top of the couch and secured it behind the couch cushions.  I made sure to move the couch to a spot where I could have lots of light the sheet.  Then I put Rebecca in the “1” shirt that all the girls have worn for their smash cake and a cloth diaper.  I didn’t cloth diaper Kate or Caroline so I put a pair of bloomies from a dress over their diapers so the diaper wouldn’t be seen.  I added some balloons to the side of her and put the cake on a pretty little flowered plate.  Voila!  The most important thing I’ve learned is to not put the baby down until you are absolutely ready for her.  Kate tried to dig in way before I had my camera in hand when she did her smash cake.
After everyone had had a bath, Kate took the balloons and set up her own smash cake for one of her “kids” in the playroom.
She put a cloth diaper on her baby and set a blanket up hanging over a chair.  Isn’t it so cute?
Do you do a smash cake for your kids?
