This summer has been busy! It’s been filled with swim team, day trips, activities, and lots of playing outside. We don’t watch much tv in our house since we downgraded our cable and in the summer we watch even less television.
I was recently given the opportunity to review a new original series on Amazon called Wishenproof. It’s available for Amazon Prime members When I mentioned the name of the show to the girls, they were immediately excited. They had already seen a preview for the show and had been wanting to watch it.
Amazon describes Wishenproof as: “a fun, magical adventure series that teaches lessons through imaginative play, Wishenproof inspires children to solve life’s big preschool problems in creative ways.” It is created by Angela C. Santomero who also created (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Creative Galaxy, Blue’s Clues, and Super Why!).
Katherine is 8, Caroline is 7, and Rebecca is 5. They’ve been expressing an interest in “real people” shows lately (as opposed to cartoons) and I was curious to see what their response would be. We do Family Movie Nights often so we added a few episodes of Wishenproof to our rotation. The girls LOVED it.
What the kids love about Wishenproof:
- They love the color and brightness of the show. It’s very inviting and kept them engaged.
- They love the characters (especially Bianca!).
- They love that they learn something (yes, they said this!).
- They love that Bianca is always on an adventure.
- They love that the show is creative and the characters use their imagination. They actually recreated some of the scenarios afterward!
- They love the music and songs.
What I love about Wishenproof (as a parent and a parent educator)
- It shows open communication between a child and a parent.
- The parents are always supportive and encouraging.
- The parents participate in activities with their children and want to have fun.
- The show teaches them core values like being brave, truthful, and honest.
- It models a great sibling relationship that consists of teamwork, sharing, and love.
- The show focuses on making good choices.
- It encourages kids to think of others.
I started to find the girls asking to watch Wishenproof at times when we wouldn’t normally watch tv. They were even willing to trade a bed time story for an episode. That says a lot to me since our kids rarely sit to watch anything in the summer.
I asked Caroline which episode was her favorite. She said she loved the episode where she learned how to start all over when you mess up. I’m not sure which episode this was (the episodes we watched didn’t show the titles) but I found this interesting. She’s been fighting with Rebecca a lot lately and I started catching her saying, “Rebecca, let’s start over.”
On a daily basis I mess up. I am not the perfect parent – no one is, really. I always say that I am so thankful for the opportunity to start over and make things right. It’s honestly one of the most important lessons that I think our kids can learn.
When I’m teaching, parents often as me about television and ask me to suggest television shows. There are only a few I recommend but I’ll be adding this to the list. I’m thankful for a show that I know reinforces the good characteristics of what I’m trying to teach our children. If they’re going to watch tv, I want it to be meaningful and for them to take something away from it.
You can start watching it on Friday, August 14th on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime you can watch the entire original series for free here! If you don’t have Amazon prime, you can sign up for a free trial here.
I bet your kids will love it as much as mine do!
