Repainting a Plastic Adirondack Chair

In the spring we were getting ready to put our plastic Adirondack chairs out in the yard after being put away for the winter.  As we pulled them out, I noticed how beat up they were.  We’ve had them for at least 12 years and it showed.  They were faded and streaked.

I got a towel out and started to wipe the Adirondack chairs down.  The green finish began to come off on the towel.  I had visions of people in white pants or shorts sitting on these chairs and getting up to find their butts green.  Matt suggested throwing them out but I didn’t want to have to spend the money to buy new ones.  I thought I could repaint them instead.

I asked on my Facebook page if anyone had had any success doing this before and got mixed reviews.  We figured it couldn’t hurt.  We have at least 7 chairs and to replace them would be pricey but a can of spray paint was less than $15.00.

Matt headed off to the store and picked up this Rust-oleum spray on the suggestion of an employee in the paint department.  He chose the color dark hunter green.

Being the awesome guy that he is, he painted all the chairs himself.  He used long, even strokes and they came out looking great.  He ended up doing 2 coats and they look brand new now.

I am so thankful we didn’t have to spend the money to buy new ones.  This was such an inexpensive fix!
Have you ever repainted patio furniture?
xoxo

Awesome! We really need good chairs for the backyard. And a deck. Have any tips on that part? 😉

Jess, we STILL don't have a deck and we've been in this house almost 9 years. No suggestions here!

We have 2 white sunloungers that have started to erode and even after cleaning them, a white residue rubs off onto clothes. After seeing this, I'm considering spraying them but I don't know where I will find that paint. I suppose normal spray paint won't do?

Vikki, I added a link to the spray paint we used. You can buy it from Amazon or at any local hardware store. I'd bet Walmart carries it too!

Thanks so much for the reply to my FB page, as I said in my other reply I found some in white at my local hardware store as we don't have Walmart. I'm excited to see what happens.
