Spring wreath

Back in March my front door was in desperate need of a wreath.  The spring wreath I normally use was thrown out after it was occupied by a bird’s nest last summer.  While the girls loved getting to see robin’s eggs and baby birds, it was a little too gross to keep.

Maggie from Smashed Peas & Carrots posted this cute wreath on her blog.  I fell in love with it!  I love grosgrain ribbon, and actually use it to tie up each order I send out from the shop.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted a pink and green wreath.  I seem to gravitate to pink and green in the spring and those were going to be the colors for Kate’s birthday party.  I also decided to separate my two colors a little differently than Maggie did.

Because I was going to use 2 colors a little more equally, I chose 3 rolls of the green with polka dot and 5 rolls of the pink ribbon.  It seems each roll comes in different yardages, which was kind of frustrating as I was standing in Joann Fabric with 3 kids who were restless.  I spent a good amount of time trying to convert and calculate how much ribbon I’d need.  Eventually I bought a little more than I thought I would need, figuring I could return any unopened rolls.

I cut all the pieces I needed on my cutting mat with a ruler and a rotary cutter.  Matt and I were headed out  for a night away (our first EVER since the kids were born – well, our first night away where we weren’t off bringing another of their siblings into the world) and I did the entire wreath sitting in the passenger seat of the car.  I just followed Maggie’s directions, which were to tie each piece in a double knot around the wreath.

To do the different sections, I placed 4 green knotted ribbons together and separated them evenly throughout the wreath.  Then I filled in between them with pink ribbon.  I know the pink ribbons aren’t even (I didn’t count them out) but I think it came out cute.

Have you ever made a wreath for your house?  How did it come out?

xoxo
